Langtang Gosainkunda Trek in October: Complete Guide

The Langtang gosainkunda Trek in October gives you suitable trails, wide open mountain skies, two of Nepal’s biggest festivals playing out in the villages, and a sacred alpine lake. The monsoon is over. The cold hasn’t fully arrived. You’re walking in between both, and that window is short.

The route runs 13 days from Syabrubesi up through the Langtang Valley, out to gosainkunda Lake at 4,380 meters across Lauribina La Pass, and back down through the Helambu trail to Kathmandu. Altitude gain is over 3,000 meters from trailhead to highest overnight point. Three separate landscapes: river gorge forest, high alpine valley, sacred lake basin. Each one looks different in October than any other time of year.

Why October Is Best for the Langtang Gosainkunda Trek

The monsoon packs up from this region by late September. What it leaves behind is a trail that has been washed clean, forests that are sharp and green, and mountain views that don’t have the dust haze of May or the grey sky of July. October mornings on this route are clear. Not always, but most of them. And clear mornings here mean Langtang Lirung at 7,234 meters hanging sharp and unobstructed above the valley. Ganesh Himal. Dorje Lakpa. Langtang Ri. All of them visible at once from certain points on the trail.

The trail itself is at its best in October. Bamboo Village to Lama Hotel in July is muddy and slick in places. In October the same stretch is firm underfoot, the Langtang Khola is running low, bridges are solid, and the forest smells different after rain has stopped. Clean. Earthy. You move faster and you notice more.

Higher up, past Langtang Village toward Kyanjin Gompa and then across to the gosainkunda route, October is the last month you’re guaranteed a dry pass at Lauribina La. Late November starts to bring snow up there. October doesn’t. For the gosainkunda Lake section to be what it should be, October is the call.

See how this route differs from the valley-only option in our guide to the Langtang gosainkunda vs Langtang Valley Trek.

Langtang Gosainkunda Route in October

The gosainkunda half of the trek starts after the route breaks from the Langtang Valley at Thulo Syabru. From there it climbs through thick forest, crosses the high pass, reaches the sacred lake, then drops through Helambu back toward Kathmandu. Here is what each stop is like in October.

  • Thulo Syabru to Sing Gompa, 3,330 meters. Four to five hours of uphill through pine and rhododendron forest. The trail is dry in October, which matters because this section gets slippery when it’s wet. Near the top, the trees open up and Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal show clearly for the first time from this side of the trek. Sing Gompa has a cheese factory that runs through October. Mornings here start cold, down jacket cold, before the sun works its way through the canopy. By afternoon it is pleasant.
  • Lauribina La Pass, 4,610 meters. The climb from Sing Gompa takes three to four hours, starting through oak forest and finishing on open rocky ground. In October there is no snow on the pass. The trail is steep and rocky in sections but nothing requires special gear. From the top you can see Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Paldor Peak, Dorje Lakpa, and Manaslu all from one spot. That view is the payoff for Day 10. Wind arrives at the summit regardless of how calm the lower trail felt at breakfast. Keep your down jacket in your own daypack on this day. Most groups cross before midday to stay ahead of cloud that builds along the ridge in the afternoon.
  • Gosainkunda Lake, 4,380 meters. The trail drops from the pass past Saraswati Kunda first, a smaller lake at 4,165 meters, then arrives at gosainkunda itself. The lake is a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site. The high season for pilgrims is August during Janai Purnima, when thousands walk up from Dhunche and Sundarijal. In October that crowd is completely gone. You get the lake quiet. The water sits clear and still. The surrounding ridgelines reflect in the surface on windless mornings. A handful of stone teahouses run here in October, basic by any measure but open and warm enough. Check our full Langtang gosainkunda trek cost page for sleeping bag rental if you need it for the cold nights at the lake.
Gosaikunda
  • Ghopte, 3,530 meters, to Kutumsang, 2,470 meters. The descent crosses Thadrepati Pass at 3,690 meters before the trail drops back into forest. Views of Annapurna, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal open up on the clear October days. Kutumsang is where the trek shifts into the lower Helambu descent.

Langtang Valley Route in October

The valley section is the first and lower half of the trek. Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa, five walking days plus one full rest day. The terrain moves from narrow river gorge and dense bamboo forest in the low sections to wide open yak pasture and glacier views near the top.

  • Syabrubesi, 1,530 meters. The Bhote Koshi river runs just below the village, and in October it is low, green, and narrow compared to its monsoon self. The drive from Kathmandu takes seven to eight hours. Five hours on the tarmac, then two to three hours on the mountain road. October keeps the road dry and passable. Our Kathmandu to Syabrubesi route guide covers what to expect on the way.
  • Lama Hotel, 2,410 meters. The trail from Syabrubesi follows the Langtang Khola upstream. The first checkpoint is Bamboo Village at 1,850 meters, which makes a good lunch stop. Beehive cliffs hang on the rock face near the river here, worth looking up for. The forest between Bamboo Village and Lama Hotel is the red panda section.
  • Langtang Village, 3,430 meters. The trail opens out past Ghora Tabela. Langtang Lirung appears above the left side of the valley for long stretches on the approach. The village was buried in the 2015 earthquake and rebuilt by the same Tamang community. In October, it is fully running. Lodges open, food stocked, trail clear both ways. Altitude lands on some people here for the first time. Eat well and sleep early on Day 4. The full story of the rebuild is in our Langtang Village earthquake account.
  • Kyanjin Gompa, 3,830 meters. The valley opens wide here into yak pasture with Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Ri, and Langtang Lirung all directly visible. The cheese factory is running in October. The rest day is spent hiking Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 meters or Tserko Ri at 5,033 meters. Kyanjin Ri is the shorter option and gives a full mountain panorama. Tserko Ri is harder and longer, but pushes further. Our separate guides on Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri break down what each one involves.

Dashain and Tihar on the Gosainkunda Trail

October carries two festivals back to back. Dashain falls in the first half, Tihar in the second. Both shift on the lunar calendar so exact dates change year to year. But the pattern holds.

Dashain is Nepal’s biggest national holiday. Schools shut, offices close, and a large share of the country travels home. Some of those people also use the holiday week to walk to gosainkunda or through the Langtang Valley. It is a meaningful pilgrimage route for Nepali people, not just a foreign trekker destination. So in the first two weeks of October, you have domestic trekkers and pilgrims on the trail alongside the peak foreign trekker season. That combination hits Kyanjin Gompa and gosainkunda Lake teahouses hardest. Those two stops fill first and fastest.

Guide and porter availability shrinks at the same time. Local staff take Dashain leave to be home with family, which is completely reasonable, but it means if you wait until late September to book a guide for an early October trip, you may not find one. We lock in guide and porter assignments for Dashain-window trips at minimum two to three months ahead.

Tihar in the second half of October is different. Domestic trekking traffic is lower. Teahouse bed availability opens up a bit. Lower route villages like Thulo Syabru have oil lamps on windowsills in the evenings during Tihar, which is worth seeing. Late October after Tihar settles is actually the better window if you want good weather without the Dashain crowd pressure.

Red Pandas in October

Langtang National Park holds the highest red panda population of any protected forest in Nepal. Most trekkers on this trail walk right through the best habitat and never look up.

The section between Bamboo Village and Lama Hotel on Day 3 is where it happens. After the monsoon, undergrowth thins out and light drops further into the bamboo. Red pandas move more openly in October than in the wet months. First hour after sunrise is the window. They sit higher than people expect, up in the bamboo rather than near the ground. Look into the canopy, not along the trail level.

Other wildlife on the same route: langur monkeys in the lower forest, Himalayan tahr on the open ridges above Kyanjin Gompa, and occasionally a Himalayan black bear visible on the far slope in the early morning. Guides who know this trail well know exactly which stretches are worth slowing down for. Our top attractions in the Langtang region covers all the wildlife and cultural stops across the full route.

What to Pack for the Langtang gosainkunda Trek in October

October packing has two separate challenges. The Syabrubesi trailhead runs at 18 to 22 degrees during the day. gosainkunda Lake drops to minus eight or lower at night. You need gear that covers both without carrying a heavy load for each.

  • Layers work better than single thick pieces. A base layer plus a mid-layer fleece plus a down jacket handles the full range from valley to lake. The down jacket needs to be in your own daypack from Day 9 onward, not in the porter’s load. Especially on Day 10 at the pass.
  • Sleeping bag rated to 0°C minimum. The gosainkunda teahouses give you blankets but the walls are thin stone. Late October nights at the lake go below minus eight. A liner adds extra warmth without much weight. Sleeping bag rental is available through us on the trek cost page.
  • Wind shell for Lauribina La. A light wind jacket in your daypack on Day 10 costs nothing to carry and matters a lot at 4,610 meters when the wind arrives.
  • Waterproof jacket. October rain is rare on this route. But it happens. A light shell also protects against wind on the lower valley sections.
  • Trekking poles. Useful on the steep descent from Lauribina La toward gosainkunda Lake, which is loose in places.
  • Sun protection. UV is strong above 4,000 meters even when the temperature feels cool. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap. People underestimate this in October.
  • Warm hat and gloves. Non-negotiable from Kyanjin Gompa upward. The mornings above 3,800 meters make this obvious very quickly. Permit details are in our Langtang gosainkunda permit guide.
