Overview of Upper Mustang Tea House Trek

The Upper Mustang Tea House Trek takes you through one of the most remote and restricted regions of Nepal, called Upper Mustang. It is tucked behind the Himalayas in a rain-shadow area near the Tibetan border. This area is dry, with towering cliffs, and unique Tibetan-influenced villages with whitewashed homes and firewood-stacked roofs. It stands out as one of the few treks that can be done even during the monsoon season (June to September).

At the heart of Upper Mustang lies Lo Manthang, the walled capital founded by King Ame Pal in 1380 AD. This ancient kingdom, once known as the “Upper Lo” was an independent Tibetan-influenced state until Nepal revoked its autonomy in 2008. There are many ancient monasteries, hidden sky caves, and Tibetan Buddhist heritages across the region. Hence, both international and national trekkers love to visit the Upper Mustang region to explore its rich history and natural beauty.

One great thing about this trek is that you stay in small tea houses run by local families. You walk from one tea house to the next along the trail, staying overnight at these simple lodges. These tea houses are simple but comfortable, offering food, a place to sleep, and sometimes hot showers. Staying here lets you meet local people and learn about their way of life.

The trek starts just above Kagbeni village and takes you through beautiful landscapes and traditional villages like Chele, Syangbochen, Ghami, Lo-Manthang, Ghar Gompa, etc. If you want a quiet, unique trek full of culture, the Upper Mustang Tea House Trek is a perfect choice.

Highlights of Upper Mustang Tea House Trek

  • Walk through the rugged desert-like terrain without worrying about rain because this region lies in a rain shadow area.
  • Enjoy the Upper Mustang Tea House Trek by staying in traditional tea houses or small lodges.
  • Enjoy stunning towering Himalayan peaks like Nilgiri, Annapurna, Tilicho, and Damodar Danda.
  • Step inside Lo Manthang’s fortified walls, the old capital of Mustang’s kingdom.
  • Explore ancient sky caves carved into sandstone cliffs 1,500-2,000 years ago.
  • Pass over key mountain passes like Yamda La (3,850 m) and Nye La (4,010 m) with epic Himalayan views.
  • Visit traditional Tibetan-style villages such as Kagbeni, Tangbe, Charang, and Ghami.
  • Experience rich Tibetan Buddhist culture through monasteries, gompas, and local customs.
  • Witness the vibrant Tiji Festival featuring unique dances and rituals in May.

Upper Mustang Tea House Experience: How It Differs from Lodge or Luxury Treks

The Upper Mustang Tea House Trek stands out by offering a genuine, unfiltered experience deeply rooted in tradition. Instead of plush accommodations and modern conveniences, you stay in simple, family-run tea houses that provide basic rooms, hearty meals, and warm hospitality. This style brings you closer to the everyday life of Mustang’s people, preserving the region’s authentic Tibetan-influenced culture.

Luxury or lodge treks focus on comfort and convenience, featuring private rooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and varied menus. These options cater to those who prefer a relaxed pace and modern amenities after long trekking days. While they offer ease and pampering, they often lack the intimate, community-driven atmosphere found in tea houses.

The true difference lies in the connection with place and people. Tea house trekking offers opportunities for cultural exchange, local interaction, and moments of quiet reflection in remote, rugged settings. Luxury treks provide convenience and comfort but tend to attract larger groups, making the experience more about relaxation than immersion.

For those short on time or wanting a different kind of adventure, the Upper Mustang trek can also be done via Jeep tour. Thus, it allows you to explore Mustang’s remote villages and landscapes without all the trekking, prioritizing authenticity.

We continue the Upper Mustang Tea House trek along its narrow alleys, which almost feel like a maze. On the sixth day of the trek to Upper Mustang Tea House, we cross a series of prominent ridges, including Taklam La and Yamdo La Pass via a narrow path. Today’s walk from Chele to Syangboche is one of the toughest, but also one of the most beautiful parts of the trek. The trail starts with a steep climb over dry hills and narrow valleys. Soon, you’ll reach the Taklam La Pass (3,624m), where you can see amazing views of the Tilicho and Damodar Himal mountains. The path continues over windy ridges and even passes old cave houses built into the cliffs.

On the way, you’ll pass through the Samar village. It’s a lovely place with barley fields and poplar trees. We will take a short tea break. After that, the trail goes down into a deep gorge, then climbs up again past Bhena and the Yamdo La Pass (3,850m). Today’s altitude remains gentle enough to avoid any acclimatization issues. Still, we keep a steady pace towards Syanbochen, where we settle in for the night.

These bring life to the barren landscape in the Upper Mustang region.

After some time, we reach Nyi La Pass (4,010 m), the highest point of the trek so far. It is also the southern boundary of the ancient Lo Kingdom. From here, the path descends into a dramatic valley, eventually leading us to Ghami. Ghami is one of the larger villages in Upper Mustang. Overnight stay in Ghami.

Moving forward, we pass through a series of chortens that mark the way.

When we reach the top, the route widens and reveals our first breathtaking view of Lo Manthang, a walled city tucked into the high desert landscape. There’s only one official entrance, so we follow the wall around to the northeast gate. Inside the walls, we find narrow alleys, old monasteries, and a royal palace sitting slightly higher than the rest of the town. It feels like stepping back in time. We stay overnight at a local teahouse.

While the king doesn’t have political power anymore, many locals still respect him and sometimes ask for his help with community matters.

Lo Manthang is full of charm and gives you the chance to see Tibetan culture up close. You can walk around the town or even hire a horse (at your own cost) to visit nearby places.

Important note: Lo Manthang is often referred to as the “Land of Monasteries.” So, you are expected to support the local community through small entry fees or donations. These are used to help preserve this unique heritage.

What Makes Upper Mustang Tea House Trek Special?

The Upper Mustang Tea House Trek is special because it takes you to a forbidden kingdom of Nepal that feels completely different from other trekking areas. Since it’s in the rain-shadow of the Himalayas, the weather stays dry even during the monsoon. It resembles a desert, with rust-colored cliffs, dry valleys, and wide open skies. It’s quiet, peaceful, and far away from crowds.

Similarly, this region has a strong Tibetan culture. You’ll walk through old villages with white houses, colorful prayer flags, and ancient monasteries. If you trek in May, you might even experience the Tiji Festival (a traditional celebration with masked dances and rituals). The walled city of Lo Manthang is a big highlight; it still has a royal palace and feels like stepping back in time. Along the way, you’ll also see sky caves carved into cliffs over 1,500-2,000 years ago.

So, what really makes the Upper Mustang trek unique is the experience you get while walking through it. The trails are remote and full of stories. You will explore the ancient Bon and Buddhist cultures with Tibetan roots and a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries in this remote and peaceful region. You’ll meet kind locals, sleep in cozy tea houses, and see stunning views of big mountains like Annapurna and Nilgiri. It’s not just a trek. It’s like visiting a long-lost kingdom where time moves slowly and every moment feels special.

Challenge, Distance, and Altitude of Upper Mustang Tea House Trek

The Upper Mustang trek takes you through some of Nepal’s toughest and driest landscapes, all above 2,800 meters. The trek distance is about 120 kilometers from Jomsom to Lo Manthang and back. During the trek, you need to walk for 5 to 7 hours on winding trails over dusty ridges, rocky paths, and narrow passes. Altitude can be a problem here as you will climb to nearly 4,000 meters at the Nyi La Pass. Hence, it is crucial to pace yourself and let your body adjust.

While the trek isn’t technical, the dry, exposed terrain and thin mountain air add a layer of difficulty. By afternoon, strong winds often whip through the valleys, blowing dust and loose soil all over the place: your face, eyes, and even your food. The trails can become slippery due to fine gravel, and the sun at this altitude can be intense. You must endure these conditions, hydrate, and maintain a steady pace, especially when you’re crossing those high passes, which demand both stamina and smart acclimatization.Tea house trek is definitely easier than camping treks, Tea House Trek Vs Camping Trek Comparision will definetely clear you doubts if you are confused about which trek option to choose.

Our package features 12 trekking days, designed to maintain a balance between walking and exploring. You have enough time to experience a unique Tibetan-influenced culture. The desert scenery, with its mountain views, is almost like a dream. We mean that this contrast is just so unreal. This is a journey that will push you to your limit. However, we assure you that the experience is beyond compare.
