Peak Climbing

Paldor Peak Climbing Overview

Paldor Peak Climbing is a classic climbing peak in the Langtang region and the Ganesh Himal range in Nepal. The Peak is one of the lesser-climbed peaks and is perfect for adventurous trekkers with some basic mountaineering training. Paldor Peak stands tall at an elevation of 5,896 m in the rural Himalayas. The Peak lies southeast of Ganesh Himal at the junction of Tiru and Karpu Danda ridge above the Tiru River Valley.

In 1949, a legendary team of H.W. Tilman, Peter Lloyd, Tenzing Sherpa, and Da Namgyal first summited Paldor Peak via the Northeast Ridge. Classified as a Group B trekking peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, the Peak climbing to Paldor is moderate to difficult and requires the use of technical gear like crampons and ice axes.

The route to Paldor Peak passes through Langtang National Park, filled with rhododendron, fir, and oak forests in lower elevations and alpine areas in higher elevations. Similarly, you’ll pass through Tamang and Gurung villages via monasteries, Chorten, and prayer flags that showcase Tibetan Buddhism throughout the journey. Once you get to the Peak’s summit, the views of Mt. Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Jugal range, and Shishapangma (8,027 m) will appeal to your eyes.

The journey starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and takes about 14 days in a round trip. Each stop here is an adventure, enclosing many stories for you to uncover. Additionally, with a team of Himalaya Guides, you will know the definition of a true climbing experience as more than just an expedition. We are a local team of this region, so we are delighted to welcome you all and promise to provide a memory for a lifetime.

Highlights of 14 Days Paldor Peak Climbing

  • Best Climbing experience in the Ganesh Himal Region, reaching up to 5,896 m in elevation.
  • Less crowded than other commercialized peak climbs, so it is an excellent option for quiet and serene adventure seekers.
  • Fantastic views of Ganesh Himal peaks, Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Manaslu (8,156 m), and other snow-capped mountains.
  • The excellent trekking trail of the Langtang Valley provides you with a unique climbing experience.
  • Thrilling segments with unique and beautiful walking and climbing terrain.
  • You’ll visit gompas, monasteries, Chortens, Mani walls, and various destinations where you’ll learn about Tibetan Buddhism.
  • You’ll walk through Langtang National Park, passing through rhododendron forests and alpine meadows, and spotting some wildlife.

A Moderately Technical Climb to the Summit of Paldor Peak (5,896 m)

The Paldor Peak is a moderately technical ascent that is suitable for both experienced trekkers with good fitness and mental state and beginner climbers with some previous mountaineering experience. TheĀ climb to Paldor Peak is not as straightforward as a pure trekking peak, yet it does not demand extreme technical expertise.

The Paldor peak climb involves a mix of snow, ice, and rocky sections, which requires using climbing gear such as crampons, ice axes, and ropes. Similarly, you can experience sections of glacier walk where proper walking and balance are a must.

One of the primary reasons Paldor Peak is considered moderately difficult is that it provides a real Himalayan climbing experience without being overwhelmingly challenging. You need to be comfortable with basic rope techniques, handling ascenders and descenders, and moving on icy ridges. So, peak climbing is perfect for starting your climbing journey, where you can walk with nature without judgment and enjoy moderate technical walks.

After Chawatar, the Paldor Peak Climbing trail continues on a ridge line where you can get mesmerizing views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Shishapangma (in Tibet) on clear days. Beyond Parvati Kund, the route ascends toward the Khurpudanda Pass (3,620 m), the highest point of the day. From the pass, the trek descends through alpine pastures and forested paths that lead you down to Somdang village, your day’s overnight point.

The villages also offer a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks of the Ganesh and Jugal Himal ranges.

On this rest day, you can explore the pastoral landscape, where villagers tend yaks, sheep, and goats on high pastures. Also, you have an option to visit the Lari mine areas. Likewise, a short hike up the valley for closer views of the surrounding ridges and glaciers is also an option.

Moreover, you can spend time with the Tamang community, learning about their customs, architecture, and daily lifestyle. Wherever you choose to visit on this day is your personal choice. However, you’ll return to Somdang for your night’s stay.

On the seventh day, you’ll leave Somdang village with the fresh energy from yesterday’s acclimatization. Leaving Somdang, the route of Paldor Peak climbing takes you through birch, pine, and rhododendron forests, following narrow paths that slowly open into high meadows. If you trek in spring, you can witness the red and pink hillside with a blossom of rhododendron, and if you are in autumn, the forests provide a crisp and golden feel.

As you gain elevation, the route crosses alpine pastures where herders bring livestock during the summer months. The higher you climb, the more the Ganesh Himal range is visible along with Paldor Peak (5,896 m). You will also pass by Jasta Khani (zinc mine) on the way.

Following a rocky glacier section, you will reach the base camp in the late afternoon. Our climbing team will set up a camp at Paldor base camp, where you can sit and enjoy a beautiful sunset view. Overnight and dinner at a tented camp in Paldor Base Camp.

Day eight starts with a hearty breakfast at the Paldor Base Camp. After the morning meal, you’ll pack your belongings and make your way towards Paldor Peak High Camp. The route is steady and exciting, taking you deeper into the alpine world. The walk begins with a gradual ascent across lateral moraines, where loose rocks and boulders require careful walking. As you climb, the views back down to the Somdang Valley become amazing while the mighty summit of Paldor Peak (5,896 m) looms closer above you.

The final section to High Camp involves a steeper climb on rocky ground that narrows into a small ridge. The area has no vegetation, with barren and stark landscapes along with just rock, ice, and sky. Upon reaching High Camp, our climbing team will set up the tent. You’ll have dinner and stay in a tented camp overnight.

Day nine is your most-awaited day, as on this day, you’ll summit one of the lesser-known but rewarding peak climbing in Nepal, Paldor Peak. The day’s climbing expedition begins very early, around 2:00–3:00 AM. You’ll leave base camp and make your way towards your ultimate destination with a headlamp, a packed lunch, and climbing gear. Don’t worry, your climbing guide will be with you every step of the way, guiding you.

The initial phase of the climb is over rocky ground and moraine, which is steep but not too difficult. After that, the route takes you onto snow and ice, where you should put on your crampons and rope up with your guide and team. The slope gradually becomes steeper, featuring sections with an incline of 40–50 degrees. Likewise, be prepared to use an ice axe for balance in certain areas.

The final section of the summit is the most challenging one due to the narrow snow ridge. The ridge is steep, and every step feels heavy due to the thin air. Also, the wind adds to the climb’s difficulty. However, the difficulty is worth it as you get to the summit of 5,896 m above sea level.

Standing at the summit of Paldor provides you with a real sense of achievement. After hours of climbing in the cold and dark, standing on top brings relief, pride, and happiness. By the time you reach the summit, sunrise will be breaking, offering a surreal view of the mountain peaks of Ganesh Himal, Langtang range, Manaslu, and Shishapangma in Tibet with its golden hues.

After appreciating yourself and spending some time at the summit, you’ll descend to base camp following the same route. By late morning or early afternoon, you return to the base camp of Paldor Peak and take a rest, particularly knowing that you completed your goal. The day’s overnight and dinner will be in the Paldor Base Camp’s tent.

This day is an extra day kept in the itinerary as a backup. In the Himalayas, things don’t always go as planned. Bad weather, heavy snowfall, and strong winds can delay the summit attempt. Thus, this extra day allows you not to miss your summit but provides you with a second chance for your climb.

The entire climbing procedure will be completed today, in case any unpredictable or unavoidable circumstances arise. Otherwise, you will rest and explore the area in PaldorĀ High Camp. Overnight at a tented camp.

Along the way, you pass through yak pastures, small streams, and open meadows. As you continue walking, the landscape changes from alpine rocks and glaciers to forests of rhododendron and pine.

As you get closer to Pangsang Pass, the trail climbs slowly. Although not among the high Himalayan passes, the Pangsang pass is definitely among the most scenic ones. The view from the pass is amazing, with the panorama of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and even parts of the Annapurna range. Our team will fix a tented camp there for your day’s dinner and overnight stay.

Combine Remote Trekking Experience Through Ruby Valley With Mountaineering

Looking to merge your remote trekking experience with the thrill of a Himalayan walk? The combination of Paldor Peak with the Ruby Valley Trek is ideal for you. Since both destination lies within the Ganesh Himal region, combining the locations adds the excitement of your expedition.

The combined route of Paldor Peak Climbing with Ruby Valley Trek begins with a trek through the untouched Ruby Valley, a hidden gem of Nepal. The Valley is home to pristine landscapes, traditional Tamang and Gurung villages, and an authentic cultural atmosphere. The trek takes you across terraced farmlands, deep river gorges, suspension bridges, and high ridges with a view of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Manaslu ranges being the highlights of the journey.

After Ruby Valley, your mountaineering expedition begins, where you must use technical climbing gear. The trek to Ruby Valley while climbing to Paldor serves as the perfect acclimatization period on the journey. In essence, combining the remote climbing of Paldor Peak with the Ruby Valley trek is ideal for trekkers who want more than a high-pass crossing but still prefer something quieter and unique.

Easily Accessible Off-the-Beaten Route, 6–8 Hours Drive From Kathmandu

One of the key aspects of Paldor Peak is its location on an off-beaten route in the Ganesh Himal region, close to Kathmandu. Unlike other Himalayan expeditions that require long internal flights or trekking parts, the Paldor journey begins with a 6-8 Hours drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Thus, the peak is one of the few Himalayan climbing destinations that combine easy accessibility with remoteness.

Starting with a 6-8 Hours drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the initial part of the trek takes you to Gatlang, one of the most significant Tamang Settlements in the Ganesh Himal Region. Then you’ll walk to Somdang via Parvatikunda. Moving further, the trek connects you with Paldor Base Camp, then to High Camp.

Finally, the ninth day takes you to your ultimate destination. Then, the journey returns through the off-beaten section of Pangpang, Chalish, Sertung, and drives back to Kathmandu.

Acclimatization Stops at Somdang and Chalish

As acclimatization is a key aspect of the Paldor Peak Climbing adventure, this package includes two separate days for it. The acclimatization stops of the journey include Somdang and Chalish. Somdang is the first village you’ll stop for acclimatization before heading up to Paldor Peak, and Chalish is the last acclimatization point after attempting the summit. Thus, both days play a crucial role in yourĀ Paldor Peak Climbing itinerary.

Somdang

At an elevation of 3,270 m/10,728 ft, Somdang is the first and ideal acclimatization stop on the way to reach the peak of Paldor. The village is in a stunning valley and offers a chance to experience the local culture and hospitality of the Tamang people. Acclimatization in this village allows you to follow the golden rule of theĀ Himalayas: ā€œclimb high, sleep low.ā€ Moreover, the region around Somdang is historically known for its mineral deposits, including zinc, copper, tin, and even rubies. So, you can visit the old mine site on the acclimatization day of Somdang.

Chalish

Chalish is the second and last location for acclimatization on the Paldor Peak Climbing treks and expedition. The village lies at an elevation of 3,000 m/9,842 ft, and acclimation takes place after completing the summit of Paldor Peak. At Chalish, climbers can rest after a long adventure. As the village lies near Tatopani, also known as ā€œhotspringā€, you can take a relaxing dip there to soothe tired muscles.
