13 Days Lhasa Kailash Tour Overview
The 13 Days Lhasa Kailash Tour is a special journey, a mix of spiritual travel and a high-Himalayan overland adventure. The trip starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tibet and ends back in Kathmandu after a full circuit to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. During these thirteen days, you slowly gain altitude, visit the old Tibetan cities of Lhasa and Shigatse, and then travel west toward the sacred areas of Mansarovar and Kailash for a 3-day sacred Kailash Kora. This itinerary is designed for both pilgrims and adventure travelers who want enough time to acclimatize, pray, walk, and also relax near the lake or under the shadow of Kailash.
Many travelers who have trekked in the Nepal Himalaya say this Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar route feels very different from normal trekking trips. Instead of long uphill climbs every day, this journey includes long but beautiful driving days across the open Tibetan plateau. Along the way, there are short walks, monastery visits, and gradual preparation for the Kailash Kora. In Lhasa, you visit famous places like the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, where you immediately feel the living Buddhist culture that gives context and meaning to the later days at Kailash and Mansarovar. After that, as you travel through Shigatse and Saga toward western Tibet, the road passes wide valleys and high mountain passes.
The core of this Lhasa to Mount Kailash tour is the 3 days Kailash Kora. The Kora starts from Yamadwar and goes around the mountain through Dirapuk, Dolma La Pass, and Zuthulphuk, giving close views of Mount Kailash that most people have only seen in pictures. These days are long and at high altitude, especially when crossing Dolma La Pass, but the trail is clear and commonly used by pilgrims. There are simple lodges and tea houses along the route, so the journey stays basic and focused on the spiritual experience. Before and after the Kora, you also spend time at Lake Mansarovar, where you can do puja, take a holy bath if you wish, or walk along the shore and enjoy the peaceful view of Kailash.
As a local operator based in Kathmandu, we design this 13-day Lhasa Kailash Tour with practical details already planned. The driving hours are realistic, the itinerary allows proper acclimatization, and the travel between Kathmandu and Lhasa is arranged smoothly. We also give clear information about altitude, road conditions, and lodge facilities, so you know what to expect. You will travel with both Nepali and Tibetan support staff who understand the route and the pilgrimage, so you do not need to worry about permits, checkpoints, or logistics during the journey. You can also join our Namsto Lake Tour if you only have a short amount of time to spend in Tibet.

You will begin the Lhasa Kailash tour from Kathmandu with a scenic flight from kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport to Lhasa. During the flight, you pass directly over the main Himalayan range, and on a clear day, you can see famous peaks like Everest, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from the window. It is one of the most beautiful ways to enter the Tibetan plateau.
After landing at Gonggar Airport in Tibet, our Tibetan team will welcome you and drive you to Lhasa city. The road follows the valley of the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo), with wide open landscapes and views very different from Nepal. Since you reach a high altitude on the first day, we keep the program light and relaxed. After checking into the hotel, you can take a short and easy walk near the hotel just to feel the atmosphere of Lhasa, but we will avoid any hard activity.

Today is your first full day in Lhasa, and it is also an important day for acclimatization in 13 days Kailash Lhasa Tibet tour itinerary. We keep the program interesting but not too tiring, so your body can slowly adjust to the high altitude. In the morning, you will visit Potala Palace, the famous winter residence of the Dalai Lama. The walk up the steps is done slowly, giving you time to breathe comfortably, look around, and get used to the altitude while exploring the chapels, old murals, and the wide view over Lhasa city.
Later, in the afternoon, you will visit Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Lhasa, located in the old town. You will walk through the traditional streets and join local Tibetans on the Barkhor Kora. Here you can see pilgrims spinning prayer wheels, chanting, and doing full-body prostrations as they circle the temple.

The drive to Shigatse follows wide river valleys and slowly rising land, giving you your first real feeling of the open spaces of the Tibetan plateau. Depending on the road condition and time, you may stop at viewpoints or small villages along the way for photos, tea, or short breaks, so the day stays comfortable while you continue moving west.
Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet and an important place for acclimatization before traveling further to Saga and Lake Mansarovar. In the afternoon, you can take a short walk around the town or visit the local market near the hotel to stretch your legs after the long drive. Today you will also visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and one of the most important monasteries in Tibet. Visiting here helps you understand the cultural and spiritual side of the journey.

On day 4 of the Tibet Kailash overland tour, you will leave Shigatse and drive to Saga. The Lhasa to Mount Kailash tour road slowly climbs higher as you pass wide river valleys, rolling hills, and long stretches of open plateau. Along the way, you may see herds of yaks and sheep, small groups of nomad tents, and distant snow-covered mountains on the horizon. These views give you a real feeling of how large and quiet the Kailash region is.
You can make regular stops for toilets, tea, photos, and short walks, so you can stretch your legs and allow your body to adjust to the higher altitude. Saga is mostly a transit town, but it is an important stop on the way to the Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Tour. After arriving, you will check into the hotel and keep the evening very relaxed, with an early dinner, warm drinks, and plenty of rest. As the altitude increases, your guide will carefully watch how you are feeling, reminding you to drink enough water, stay warm, and move slowly.

Today you will drive from Saga to the holy Lake Mansarovar. This is a very special day for many travelers. The drive is long, but you will see beautiful mountains and wide valleys along the way. If the weather is clear, you might even see the outline of Mount Kailash far in the distance for the first time.
Arriving at the lakeshore near Chiu Gompa is often a moving experience. The air feels crisp, and you will see the light on the water change quickly. After reaching your lodge, you can walk by the water, sit quietly, or pray. We keep everything slow and calm so you can rest, breathe, and get ready for the trek around Mount Kailash.

From today onwards, you will start the Kailash Kora, which is the main highlight of the Tibet Kailash overland tour journey. But to start the sacred Mount Kailash Kora, after breakfast, you will first drive to Yamadwar, known as the “gateway of the god of death.” At Yamadwar, many pilgrims stop to perform rituals before beginning the walk. Before you start trekking, you can leave your heavy bags in the vehicle and carry only a small daypack so you can walk comfortably.
The path starts with a gentle walk through the Lha Chu valley, and you will see Mount Kailash rising on your right side. The walk to Dirapuk is not steep and technically hard, but the high altitude means you should walk slowly and carefully. You can take plenty of breaks for rest, photos, and tea at local teahouses. As you get closer to Dirapuk, the view of the north face of Kailash becomes truly amazing. When you reach the lodge, you can sit outside, stay warm, and enjoy the beautiful mountain view. It is one of the most beautiful evenings you will ever forget.

Day 7 of the Lhasa to Mansarovar overland trip is the hardest and most important day of the Kailash Kora. You will start early from Dirapuk, before sunrise, to take advantage of calm morning weather. At first, the trail goes up slowly and then gets steeper as you climb toward Dolma La, the highest point of the trek. The air at this altitude is thin, so every step feels heavier. You will walk very slowly and take frequent short breaks to breathe, and focus on steady breathing.
At the top of the Dolma La Pass, you will see many prayer flags and feel a strong spiritual atmosphere as pilgrims cross, pray, and honor loved ones. After Dolma La, the trail drops steeply toward Gauri Kund (Tso Tuk). This part of the trail can be rocky and sometimes has snow or ice, so you need to walk carefully to protect your knees. Once the path becomes flatter, you can relax and enjoy the wide valley views. By the time you reach Zuthulphuk, the hardest part is behind you, and most people feel a mix of relief, gratitude, and quiet satisfaction.

After the big effort of yesterday, today’s walk feels much easier. From Zuthulphuk, the trail gradually descends through a wide valley, and you will see the north face of Mount Kailash slowly disappear behind you. The air feels easier to breathe as you go lower, and you can enjoy the peaceful valley, the flowing river, and the surrounding scenery. There are small tea shops along the way where you can rest and look back at the path you have finished.
By late morning or around midday, you will reach the spot where the vehicles are waiting to take you back to Mansarovar. Darchen marks the end of the Kailash circumambulation (Kora). From Darchen, you will drive back to the shores of Lake Mansarovar. When at Mansarovar, many people take a quiet walk along the lake or sit to reflect on the Kora, offer prayers, or simply soak in the calm. It’s a gentle, relaxing day that lets your body and mind recover after the climb over Dolma La.

This extra day at Mansarovar is a very important part of your Kailash and Mansarovar pilgrimage tour. After the long trek, your body needs real rest, and your mind needs time to remember everything you have seen. You can spend this day however you like. You can either take a short walk by the water, visit the nearby Chiu Gompa monastery, or sit quietly to pray and meditate. The lake looks different throughout the day as the light changes, and many people find these quiet moments very special.
Practically, this day also helps everyone stay healthy. If you need more sleep or more water to recover from the high climb, this is the perfect time. We want to make sure everyone feels strong and well before we start the long drive back to Saga. We have found that this extra day helps our guests sleep better, eat better, and feel much more relaxed instead of rushed.

After a final morning at Mansarovar, you will leave the lake and start driving back toward Saga. The drive back route is familiar, but the feeling is different now because you’ve completed the Kailash Kora. The long roads and grazing yaks will feel more familiar. Many travelers spend this time looking out the window and thinking about their memories from the mountain and the lakeshore. We make regular stops for breaks, tea, and snacks so the long drive feels comfortable.
By mid to late afternoon, you will reach Saga, where the lower altitude makes breathing a little easier. After checking into the hotel, you can take a short walk around town or rest with a warm drink. This day is all about relaxing and letting your body recover before the final drive back to Shigatse and Lhasa.

Today, you continue east from Saga back to Shigatse, gradually leaving the remote western plateau behind. The road feels smoother and more familiar, and as the hours pass, you slowly lose altitude, which usually improves sleep and appetite. You will again follow river valleys and rolling terrain, crossing occasional passes with wide views.
Reaching Shigatse, you come back to a larger Tibetan city with more facilities and a slightly milder climate compared to the Kailash region. After hotel check‑in, you can stretch your legs with a short walk in town, visit local shops for small souvenirs, or simply rest. If Tashilhunpo Monastery was not fully explored earlier, you may have time to visit or at least walk in its surrounding area.

From Shigatse, you will take the last drive back to Lhasa, completing your big journey. The road today is smoother and shorter than the last two days. You will drive along the beautiful Yarlung Tsangpo and other river valleys. It is a calm day where you can talk with your group and discuss your favorite parts of the trip. We usually arrive in Lhasa by mid-afternoon.
Back in Lhasa, the lower altitude and better facilities feel very comfortable after the basic lodges near Kailash. Later in the day, you can take a walk around Barkhor Street, shop for souvenirs like prayer flags or Tibetan handicrafts, or just relax at the hotel. This is also a good time to check your belongings, charge devices, and get ready for your flight back to Kathmandu the next day.

On the final day of the Kailash trek, we transfer you from the hotel to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for your flight back to Kathmandu. The drive to the airport follows the river valley once again, giving you a last look at the Tibetan landscape. If the weather is clear, the flight offers another beautiful view of the Himalayan range. After landing in Kathmandu, our team from Himalaya Guide Nepal will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.
Back at Kathmandu’s lower altitude, the warm air, busy streets, and city sounds feel very different from the quiet plateau of Tibet and the peaceful shore of Mansarovar. Your Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar Yatra officially ends here. If you plan to stay longer in Nepal, we are happy to help arrange additional travel, whether it is a short city tour, a sightseeing trip, or a trek to Everest Base Camp, so you can also experience the Nepali side of the Himalaya.

Lhasa Kailash Tour 13 Days Map
The Lhasa Kailash tour map helps you understand how the journey connects Kathmandu, Lhasa, western Tibet, Mount Kailash, and Lake Manasarovar in one continuous loop. It shows the main driving routes, the three-day Kailash Kora, important overnight stops, and altitude changes. You will know where you will travel, as well as how the route is planned for proper acclimatization and a comfortable pace.
As shown in the Tibet Kailash overland tour map, the tour starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, and then continues overland along the Friendship Highway through Shigatse and Saga, before reaching Mansarovar and Darchen. On the map, the Kora is shown as a three-day loop from Yamadwar to Dirapuk, crossing Dolma La Pass, then going down to Zuthulphuk, and finally back to Darchen.
Route to Kailash:
Kathmandu → Lhasa (flight) → Shigatse → Saga → Mansarovar (Chiu Gompa) → Darchen → Yamadwar → Dirapuk → Dolma La Pass → Zuthulphuk → Darchen
After finishing the Kora, the return journey follows the same road back across Tibet.
Return route:
Mansarovar → Saga → Shigatse → Lhasa → Kathmandu (flight)
This map is especially helpful for first-time travelers going to Tibet and Kailash. It helps them understand which parts are driving and which are walking, how the altitude changes each day, and where the main cultural and spiritual places are along the route.
Food and Accommodation During the Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar Tour
During the Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar yatra package, you will stay in a mix of comfortable hotels in cities and simple lodges in remote high-altitude areas. In Lhasa and Shigatse, you stay in clean, tourist-standard hotels with amenities such as twin-sharing rooms, attached bathrooms, hot showers, and heating. As you travel further west toward Saga, Mansarovar, and Mount Kailash, the accommodation becomes more basic. Rooms are usually twin or shared, toilets may be common, and hot water is limited. In busy seasons, lodges can feel crowded.
Likewise, during the Kailash Kora (at Dirapuk and Zuthulphuk), lodges are very basic teahouse style with thin walls, shared toilets, and sometimes no running water. A warm sleeping bag liner, warm clothes, and a headlamp are very useful here. We always try to book the best available places, but this is a remote high-altitude region, so expect simple facilities rather than luxurious ones.
Food also changes as you go from cities to the remote plateau. In Lhasa and Shigatse, you can get more variety, including toast, eggs, soup, pasta, momo, thukpa, rice, noodles, vegetables, and sometimes meat. As you move toward Kailash, the menu becomes simpler, usually rice, noodles, potatoes, vegetable curry, soup, dal, eggs, and tea. During the Kora, food is very basic, and we often use lodge kitchens or simple packed meals.
If you have special dietary needs, we can arrange it, but you need to inform us in advance so we can plan properly and inform the lodges wherever possible.
Permit Required for the 13 Days Lhasa Kailash Tour from Kathmandu
For this Lhasa Kailash tour, travelers must compulsorily obtain four permits, which are the China Group Visa, Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), Alien’s Travel Permit, Military Permit, and Foreign Affairs Permit. In addition, you need to obtain a China Group visa. And all of them must be arranged through an authorized Tibet tour operator. Independent travel is not allowed on this route.
Here is a detailed breakdown of what they are and why they are mandatory:
| Document and Permits | What it is | Why you need it | Processing detail |
| China Group Visa | A special group permit issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu on a separate sheet of paper, not in your passport. | Necessary to enter Tibet from Nepal. It replaces the standard Chinese visa (any current visa in your passport will be canceled). | Requires your original passport in Kathmandu for 3–5 working days. |
| Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) | It is the entry pass for the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. | Without this, you cannot board a flight to Lhasa or cross the border at Kerung/Gyirong. | We apply for this in Lhasa 20–30 days before your trip. |
| Alien’s Travel Permit | It is a Restricted Area permit issued by the Public Security Bureau (Local Police). | To travel to unopened” areas outside of Lhasa, including Shigatse, Saga, and the Kailash region. | Usually processed once you arrive in Tibet/Shigatse using your original passport. |
| Military Permit | A high-level security clearance from the Military Office in Lhasa. | Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are located near the international border, making this mandatory. | This is the most sensitive permit and takes about 2 weeks to finalize. |
| Foreign Affairs Permit | A final clearance from the Foreign Affairs Office in Tibet. | Required for all foreigners visiting sensitive border prefectures, such as Ngari. | Processed alongside the Military Permit as part of your package. |
Regulations for Kailash can change seasonally, so we always reconfirm the latest permit and visa conditions with you during booking and again before final payment to ensure everything is in line with the current rules. Likewise, to ensure all the documents and permits for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra are processed correctly, you, as a traveler, need to do the following:
- Send us your passport copy and required personal details in time.
- Arrive in Kathmandu a few days before departure, so we can process the China Group Visa at the embassy.
Since the visa is for the whole group, everyone must enter and exit Tibet on the same dates and follow the same route.
Kailash Lhasa Tour Difficulty
The Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar tour isn’t a technically challenging trek. For this, you do not need climbing skills, ropes, or mountaineering experience. The trails are clear and easy to follow. The thing that makes this journey difficult is the high altitude, long driving days across the Tibetan plateau, simple accommodation, and one very hard day crossing Dolma La Pass during the Kailash kora.
From Lhasa to Shigatse and Saga, the main challenge is the altitude, long hours in the vehicle, and adjusting to sleep above 3,500 M and 4,500 M. Most reasonably fit people can handle this part well if they move slowly, drink plenty of water, and avoid heavy activity in the evening. Also, good acclimatization in the first few days helps a lot for the rest of the trip.
The hardest part of the tour is the 3 day Mount Kailash Kora. Day 1 (Yamadwar to Dirapuk) is a steady walk at high altitude. It is not steep, but the thin air makes it feel harder. Day 2 (Dolma La Pass) is the most difficult day. The trail is long, steep, and high, with a big climb and descent in one day. Day 3 (Zuthulphuk to Darchen) is easier, mostly downhill, and feels much more relaxed after crossing the pass.
If you can walk about 5 – 7 Hours a day on hilly terrain at home and do not have serious heart or lung problems, you can complete this tour with proper pacing and support. That said, this journey is suitable for both adventure travelers and pilgrims who understand that the trip is not only physical, but also a spiritual experience that requires patience, slow walking, and a strong mindset.
Best Time to Do the Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar Tour
The best time to do the Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar tour is from late April to mid-October. During these months, the roads are open, high mountain passes are mostly free of heavy snow, and flights and overland travel are more reliable. While nights are still cold at Mansarovar and during the Kailash kora, daytime temperatures are more comfortable, which makes walking and acclimatization easier.
Likewise, late April to June is also one of the best periods. The weather is usually dry and clear, so you can get beautiful views of Mount Kailash and the surrounding mountains. You will also find fewer crowds compared to the peak pilgrimage season, which makes the journey feel more peaceful. July and August are warmer, and the landscape looks greener, but there can be more clouds and occasional rain. You can still travel, but your plans may need to stay flexible because the weather can change quickly on the Tibetan plateau.
September and early October are also excellent months for this tour. The skies are often stable, the air is clear, and the light is very good for photography, especially around Mansarovar and during the kora. But, if you are sensitive to cold or traveling with older family members, May – June and September are usually the best choices. These months offer a good balance of temperature, road conditions, and weather stability, especially for the difficult Dolma La pass day.
We don’t recommend this Lhasa Kailash tour from November to March. It’s because during this time, the region becomes extremely cold, mountain passes can close due to snow, and many lodges and services near Kailash and Mansarovar are limited or closed.
Lhasa Kailash Tour vs Namtso Lake Tour vs Lhasa Kailash EBC Tour
