Larkya La Pass (5,106 M)

Conquer one of the world’s most exclusive high-altitude passes without the full three-week commitment. The Short Manaslu Trek is an 11-day journey into the restricted heart of the Gorkha Himalayas, circling Mount Manaslu, the “Mountain of the Spirit” (8,163 M). The experience is remote, quiet, and far less crowded than Everest or Annapurna, offering a focused version of the classic circuit.

The journey begins with a bus transfer from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, where the trekking route starts after leaving the highway behind. From there, you move through the Budhi Gandaki valley, gradually gaining altitude through river gorges and traditional villages. The highlight comes with the crossing of Larkya La Pass (5,106 M). After the descent, the route continues to Tilije, followed by a public jeep to Besisahar, and a final deluxe bus transfer back to Kathmandu.

This trek is designed for fit trekkers who want the full Manaslu experience in a shorter timeframe than the 15 days Manaslu Circuit Trek. It includes equal cultural immersion in the Nubri Valley, where Tibetan Buddhist traditions remain deeply preserved. As a restricted area trek, solo travel is not permitted, and the package includes licensed guides along with the full permit set (RAP, MCAP, ACAP, and local fees). Careful acclimatization stops, hand-picked teahouses, and guided passage over Larkya La ensure a safe and structured high-altitude experience from start to finish.

Manaslu Circuit Trek

5,106m

The Manaslu Circuit trek goes around Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world (8,156 m/26,758 ft). Manaslu Circuit trek is a 14-day moderate trek starting with a drive to Machha Khola, highlighting Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) at just $746. The trek opened in 1992 and has since gained popularity, largely due to its amazing natural beauty and pristine surroundings. The trek takes place near the Nepal-Tibet border; therefore, you can see a blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures along the trail. You will hike through nice forests filled with rhododendron, pine, cedar, birch, and juniper trees, as well as beautiful meadows. The trek to remote Manaslu begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Arughat, followed by Soti Khola, which takes a full day before you reach the trekking area to start your trek.

As you continue during the Manaslu Circuit Trek Itinerary, you will notice a marked change in the land formation, as you will see distinct river gorges cut by the Budhi Gandaki River. The suspension bridges will sway slightly over the roaring river as you cross from one village to the next, both villages on their respective hill sides. With each turn you take, the sheer beauty of the snow-capped peaks before you, of Manaslu included, will leave you speechless with awe and admiration. Prayer flags will blow with the wind, carrying mantras and blessings to the next valley as you make your way through, and there are old monasteries that leave you seeing and understanding how important this part of the world is in relation to growth, spirituality, and connection. Additionally, it is mandatory to bring microspikes or crampons for the trek. For connectivity, we recommend using an NTC SIM, as it provides better coverage in remote areas.

Top 3 Manaslu Treks For 2026/27

Mount Manaslu stands at 8,163 metres, the eighth highest mountain on earth, and the trekking region around it was closed to outsiders until 1991. That late opening is part of why Manaslu still feels the way it does. About 50 to 80 trekkers per day walk these trails during peak season. Everest Base Camp sees over 400. The restricted area permit system enforces that difference, and the Tibetan Buddhist culture in the Nubri and Tsum valleys has stayed intact in a way that regions open for decades longer simply have not.

Three routes run through this region. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is 14 days, crosses Larkya La Pass at 5,106 metres, and starts from $876. The Tsum Valley Trek is 12 days, reaches 3,700 metres through a hidden Buddhist valley with active monasteries and no high pass crossing, and starts from $1,035. And the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is 19 days combining both routes with a maximum altitude of 5,160 metres, the most complete experience in the region, from $1,275. No domestic flight needed for any of them. The drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead at Machha Khola takes 6 to 8 hours.

These are not beginner treks. Manaslu works best for trekkers who have already done Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, or a similar Himalayan route. Restricted area permits are mandatory and a licensed guide is required by law on all three routes. Our team arranges all permits before you leave Kathmandu. Tell us your dates and experience on WhatsApp (+977 9851193013) and we tell you honestly which route fits.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek trail is rough, steep in sections, and passes through small stone villages where the communities look significantly different from anything on the Everest or Annapurna routes. Tibetan Buddhist culture runs through everything here: prayer wheels at village entrances, mani walls along the trail, monks in red robes in Lho and Samagaun. The acclimatization day at Samagaun on day eight includes an optional hike toward Manaslu Base Camp with Manaslu at 8,163 metres, Himalchuli at 7,893 metres, and Ganesh Himal at 7,422 metres all visible from the ridge above.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Group

And day 11 is the Larkya La Pass crossing at 5,106 metres, which is a long day, 8 to 9 hours, starting before dawn from Dharmasala at 4,460 metres. Is the crossing hard? Yes, and The descent to Bimthang on the other side is steep. But it is also the day most trekkers on this circuit remember longest. Three permits are required: Manaslu Restricted Area Permit at $100 per person per week in peak season (September to November) or $75 per person per week in other months, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit at NPR 3,000, and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit at NPR 3,000. In Tsum Valley Trek, Tsum means “vivid” in Tibetan. The Tsum valley was sealed from outside contact for most of its history and the culture inside it reflects that. The Tsum people have their own dialect, their own farming calendar, their own relationship with the monasteries that have governed village life here for centuries. Mu Gompa at 3,700 metres is the highest monastery in the valley and one of the most active in the Manaslu region. Rachen Gompa is a nunnery. The sacred caves associated with Milarepa, the Tibetan Buddhist saint, are part of what makes this valley a pilgrimage route as much as a trekking route.

Birendra Lake at Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

But this trek reaches a maximum altitude of 3,700 metres with no high pass crossing, which makes it the most accessible of the three Manaslu routes for trekkers who want the cultural depth without the extreme altitude demands. Daily walking is 4 to 6 hours on trails that are less traveled than almost any other route in the Manaslu Conservation Area. Three permits are required: Tsum Valley permit, Restricted Area Permit, and Local Government permit.

Is it worth the permit complexity? For trekkers who want the most intact Buddhist culture in the Manaslu region, yes. Our team arranges all three.

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is the only route that covers both the Tsum Valley’s Buddhist cultural depth and the full Manaslu Circuit including the Larkya La Pass crossing. At 19 days it is the longest of the three and the most strenuous, reaching 5,160 metres on the pass day. Four permits are required: Tsum Valley permit, Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. Our team handles all four.

Photo Time Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

And what this route gives that neither the Circuit nor the Tsum Valley alone provides is the full picture of what the Manaslu region actually is. What does this route give that neither alone provides?

The lower cultural valleys, the high mountain terrain, the pass crossing, and the descent into the Annapurna region at Dharapani, all in one continuous journey. Two acclimatization days are built in, at Samagaun before the pass and the option to hike toward Manaslu Base Camp from there.

Are Shorter Manaslu Trekking Options Available?

Yes. And the Manaslu Short Trek covers the essential Manaslu Circuit in 9 days, still crossing Larkya La Pass at 5,106 metres, and starts from $1,025. What you skip compared to the full 14-day route is the lower Budhi Gandaki gorge section, the cultural villages in the first three trail days, and some of the gradual altitude gain that makes the longer itinerary more forgiving on acclimatization. But you still get the pass crossing, Samagaun, Samdo, and the Manaslu massif views.

But this route uses private 4WD transport to reach the higher trailhead faster, which cuts trail days without cutting the high-altitude experience. It suits trekkers with 10 to 12 days total travel time who have prior altitude experience and do not need the extended lower valley approach. All the same permits apply, a licensed guide is still mandatory, and group size goes up to 1 to 16 people on this itinerary.

What If You Want Manaslu Adventure But Prioritize Comfort?

The Manaslu Luxury Trek is a 12-day version of the Circuit that covers the same Larkya La Pass crossing at 5,160 metres with a combination of hotel accommodation in Kathmandu and the best available teahouses along the trail, private jeep and bus transport, and a per-person cost starting from $2,055. Group size is 2, which makes it effectively a private guided experience.

But worth understanding what luxury means in this context first. The Manaslu region is remote. Teahouses here are not the polished lodge-style accommodation you find on the Everest route. The best available accommodation in Samagaun and Samdo is still a basic mountain teahouse, warmer and cleaner than the standard option, but not comparable to a Pokhara hotel. The luxury difference is real in Kathmandu, in the private vehicle, and in the guide-to-trekker ratio. On the trail itself, the upgrade is comfort at the margin, not a transformation of the experience. If that is the right fit for you, we can explain exactly what each night looks like on this itinerary before you book.
