Overview Of Khopra Danda Trek

The Khopra Danda Trek, also called the Khayer Lake Trek, is a peaceful and less-crowded route in the Annapurna region. After driving from Kathmandu to Pokhara, the trek begins at Nayapul and proceeds through villages such as Tikhedunga and Ghorepani. You’ll walk forest trails and ridgelines with stunning views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and Hiunchuli. A day hike from Khopra Ridge (3,660 m) takes you to the sacred Khayer Lake ( 4,600 m). Then, the route reconnects to the main Annapurna Circuit trail. It ends in Tatopani, where you can enjoy a relaxing time in a natural hot spring.

During the trek, you’ll stay in simple, welcoming community lodges run by Magar and Gurung families. The path passes through traditional villages like Swanta and Paudwar, where you can experience local life. In spring, rhododendrons bloom and fill the air with sweet scents. During Janai Purnima, local people and pilgrims visit Khayer Lake to honor Lord Shiva.

All in all, the Khopra Danda Trek is ideal for travelers looking for a peaceful adventure with unforgettable scenery, fewer crowds, and a deeper connection to nature and culture. It’s the perfect alternative to the busier trails in the Annapurna region, offering both solitude and soul.

What To Expect During Khopra Danda Trek

  • Walk along the ridge from Dobato to Khopra Danda with close-up views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri on both sides.
  • Watch two amazing sunrises: first at Muldai Viewpoint, then from the wide-open ridge at Khopra Danda.
  • Take the quiet hiking trail to Khayer Lake (4,600 m), a peaceful, high-altitude lake fed by glaciers.
  • Stay in friendly, community-run lodges and try local yak cheese in the village of Paudwar.
  • Walk through rhododendron forests, bright pink in spring, golden brown in autumn.
  • Look out for danphe birds, Himalayan goats (thar), or maybe even a musk deer on the way.
  • Spend time in Gurung and Magar villages like Tikhedunga, Paudwar, and Ghorepani, and witness the daily life.
  • End the trek with a relaxing dip in the natural hot springs by the river in Tatopani.

Permit Requirements For the 11 Days Khopra Danda Trek

For theĀ 11-day Khopra Danda TrekĀ in 2025, you need to obtainĀ an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).Ā This permit grants access to the Annapurna Conservation Area, ensuring the protection of its unique ecosystems and supporting local communities. You also hike to the spiritual Khayer Lake, where locals and pilgrims gather and pray every year. So, you will witness their local culture and traditions.

The list of main challenges you might face is below:

  • The route has steep and long uphill climbs, especially betweenĀ Chistibung and Khopra Danda.
  • Sleeping at high altitude, up to 3,660 meters, may cause mild altitude sickness for some trekkers.
  • Some parts of the path are rough and uneven, requiring careful footing.
  • Medical facilities are limited along the route because the trek passes through remote areas.
  • Lodges are few along the route and offer only basic amenities, so expect simple facilities and limited services.
