Overview Of Everest Base Camp Trek By Drive Via Salleri

The Everest Base Camp Trek by drive is a unique and more adventurous way to traverse the foothills of the world’s highest mountain, Everest (8,848.86 meters). You will begin with a thrilling overland journey to Salleri from Kathmandu rather than taking a flight to Lukla. It offers a more authentic way to reach Everest Base Camp, as you will follow the footsteps of early Everest expedition pioneers.

The road connecting the capital city with Salleri is adventurous to say the least. You will drive on the winding highway, passing by beautiful Nepalese countryside, hills, and river banks. The road is not paved all the way, so you will drive on a bumpy and dusty off-road. It takes 8 to 9 hours of driving, but the long hours are worth it. The dramatic landscapes and scenery heighten the sense of adventure that awaits you.

From the quaint village of Salleri (2,350 meters), you will drive to Tham Danda or Thamdanda. From here, you will start your trekking journey to the base camp of Everest (5,364 meters) and Kalapatthar (5,545 meters). You will trek on less-frequented trails and pass by less-visited villages, such as Paiya, before joining the classic trail. From Monjo, you will enter the Sagarmatha National Park area. It takes you past notable Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, and more.

En route, you will cross thrilling suspension bridges, dense forests, and diverse landscapes. The rustic teahouses along the way provide you with shelter and meals during the trek. Run by locals, they also offer insight into the local Sherpa culture, customs, and their unique way of life. The ancient monasteries, gompas, mani walls, and chortens along the trail provide insights into the region’s religion and heritage.

The 15 Days Everest Base Camp Trek by drive is an excellent adventure for those who want to experience authentic Himalayan trekking. You will be greeted with breathtaking mountain views, surreal scenery, and friendly locals. It is a rewarding venture that offers an extraordinary Everest region trekking journey into the heart of the Himalayas.

How Important is Acclimatization During EBC Trek by Drive?

Acclimatization is extremely important during the EBC Trek by Drive. It is because many trekkers start to experience altitude-related sickness as they ascend to elevations above 3,000 meters. The thinning level of oxygen in the atmosphere at higher elevations is the cause of altitude sickness. Acclimatization plays a crucial role in minimizing or preventing the risk.

The EBC by drive is a high-altitude venture. You will climb to an elevation of 5,545 meters above sea level at Kalapatthar. As a result, altitude sickness is a common worry for trekkers. Its common symptoms include headache, nausea, extreme fatigue, insomnia, and breathing difficulty. Taking an acclimatization day allows your body to adapt to the increasing elevation and lower oxygen levels. Hence, it reduces the risk of experiencing altitude sickness. During the 15 days EBC Trek by Drive, you will take acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. These are strategically placed acclimatization stops.

The first stop, Namche, is situated at an elevation of 3,440 meters above sea level. After hiking to Lukla (2,860 meters) and Phakding (2,610 meters), you will gain significant elevation here. As a result, it is a crucial stop for acclimatization, which helps prevent symptoms of altitude sickness. On the rest day, you will practice the “climb high, sleep low” acclimation strategy. You will ascend to slightly higher elevations, such as Everest View Hotel (3,880 meters) or Khumjung Village (3,790 meters), and then return to Namche to spend the night.

Dingboche is situated at an elevation of 4,410 meters above sea level. It is the second major acclimatization stop that comes right after Tengboche (3,860 meters). From Dingboche, you will trek to Lobuche at 4,910 meters. As you can see, it is another high ascent. Thus, trekkers must take a rest day to adapt to the elevation. You will hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083) and return to Dingboche. This is the last stop before ascending to Everest Base Camp.

Permit For 15 Days Everest Base Camp Trek by Drive

Trekking to Everest Base Camp by Drive requires two permits. You will need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit.

The trail enters the Sagarmatha National Park area from Monjo. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also a protected area. Hence, trekkers must obtain a permit to access the area. It helps regulate tourism in the area, and the fees support the park’s conservation efforts. You can get the permit in Kathmandu or at the park’s entrance at Monjo. The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit costs NPR 1,500 per person for SAARC Nationals and NPR 3,000 per person for non-SAARC nationals.

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit is a local permit. It is also known as “Trek Card.” The local authorities in the Khumbu region issue the permit, which can be obtained upon arrival in Lukla. The cost is NPR 2,000 per person for the first four weeks, after which it increases to NPR 2,500 per person.

Depending on the Salleri to EBC route, you may also need to get the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit. If your route passes through the conservation area, you are required to obtain a permit for access. Those driving to Jiri or Salleri may need to obtain a permit. It can be obtained in Kathmandu or at the entry checkpoint of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. The fee is similar to the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, i.e., NPR 1,500 per person for SAARC Nationals and NPR 3,000 per person for non-SAARC nationals.

Weather Conditions During the EBC Trek by Drive

The season also influences the weather and temperature of the region. Nepal experiences four seasons annually: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Among the four, spring and autumn are the best times for trekking due to the favorable weather conditions. Meanwhile, summer and winter are the least favorable times for the trip.

Spring is one of the best seasons when the temperature becomes moderate and the weather becomes more favorable. The days are bright and sunny with clear skies. The average daytime temperature is 15°C, while the nighttime temperature can drop as low as -1°C. Blooming rhododendron flowers and wildflowers decorate the lower trails of the Khumbu region in springtime. Similarly, autumn offers the most favorable and stable weather conditions for the EBC trek by drive. In addition to the great weather, the temperature is also mild. The temperature ranges from around 17°C during the day to as low as -8°C at night. The autumn foliage turns the forest trail golden and crisp while offering excellent visibility.

Summer in Nepal overlaps with the monsoon season. Thus, there is heavy rainfall in the lower, hilly areas. The off-road connecting Salleri and Kathmandu becomes muddier and dangerous due to rain. There is a high risk of landslides and mudslides blocking the road. The average daytime temperature is around 22°C, while the nighttime temperature is around 4°C. Thus, summertime is not recommended for a trek to EBC by Drive. With the arrival of winter, the weather becomes gloomy, and it begins to snow in higher-altitude areas. The temperature drops below the freezing point, exposing trekkers to the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. During the day, the temperature at higher elevations is around -5°C. Transportation from Kathmandu to Salleri

Local buses and jeeps are used for roadway transportation between Kathmandu and Salleri. The road connecting the capital city to the rural village of Salleri is rough and dusty. While buses are budget-friendly options, jeeps are faster and more convenient. Here are briefs on these transportation modes for complete information:

Shared or public Jeep

Jeeps are the most preferred mode of transportation for traveling to Salleri from Kathmandu and vice versa. Shared Jeep, as the name suggests, means you will have to share it with other fellow travelers. A jeep usually has a 7-seater space. Thus, a solo or small group of trekkers can share the jeep and also the cost. It is cheaper than renting a private jeep and more comfortable than traveling in a local bus. The cost of a shared or public jeep is around NPR 3,500 to NPR 4,000 per person.

You can book the ticket through travel agencies or jeep stands at Gongabu Bus Park or Chabahil. The vehicle does not provide hotel pickup, so you will need to arrange your own transportation to the pickup point. The jeep usually departs early, around 5 to 7 a.m., to avoid traffic. Similarly, since it is a shared jeep, the vehicle will make occasional stops at notable stops. It takes 8 to 9 hours to drive from Kathmandu to Salleri. But the distance can vary slightly depending on the road conditions and stops.

Private Jeep

The most comfortable and convenient way of driving from Kathmandu to Salleri is via a private jeep. It is a perfect alternative and offers more flexibility than a shared jeep or local bus. Traveling in a private jeep is also faster. Likewise, it is ideal for a group of 6 to 7 trekkers. You can set your departure time and make stops along the way as needed or preferred. Private jeep also provides hotel pick-up and drop-off services at a designated location.

Renting a private jeep is costly and can cost anywhere from NPR 25,000 to NPR 35,000. However, the type of vehicle, time of the year, and services can influence the cost. You can rent the jeep through the local travel agency. If you are in a group, you can split the cost and enjoy the comfort together. For solo trekkers, the price can be pretty hefty.

Local Bus

Compared to jeeps, local buses are a less popular transportation option to travel to Salleri from the capital city. It is more affordable and costs around NPR 2,000 to NPR 3,500 per person. The bus also usually departs early in the morning. The departure point is Gongabu Bus Park or Chabahil. Traveling by local bus is an ideal option for those seeking a budget-friendly mode of transportation. Similarly, you will travel like a local and gain a more authentic experience. It also provides you with several opportunities for cultural interactions. You can book your local bus ticket from bus stands or through local trek agencies.
