Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek Overview

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek is a long, high-altitude journey that combines the classic Annapurna Circuit with a special side trip to Tilicho Lake. The trek starts in the lower foothills around Bulbule and follows the Marsyangdi River past waterfalls and villages like Tal as it climbs into the Manang region. One of the biggest highlights is Tilicho Lake, located at 4,919 M, known as one of the highest alpine lakes in the world. The trail slowly rises to help trekkers adjust to the altitude, passing from green forests and river valleys into the dry, windy landscapes of the high Himalayas near Tilicho Peak.

The trek then crosses the famous Thorong La Pass at 5,416 M, where trekkers enjoy wide views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. After the pass, the trail enters the Mustang region and visits the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath Temple. From there, the route continues down through the deep Kali Gandaki valley to the natural hot springs at Tatopani. The final part of the trek passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages such as Shikha and Ghorepani and ends with a sunrise view from Poon Hill. This journey offers a complete experience of Nepal’s mountains, culture, and diverse landscapes.

Continuing further, you reach Chamje, where massive waterfalls crash down from the rocks right beside the path, sending a cool mist onto your face as you take a break.

The last part of the day is a tough climb up steep, rocky stone staircases that challenge your legs and lungs. But at the top, a dramatic stone gateway opens to the village of Tal, sitting on a surprisingly flat, sandy plain. Once the bottom of a high-altitude lake, it now feels like a hidden paradise with white sand, tall waterfalls, and cozy lodges. Here, you spot the first mani walls and prayer flags, marking the official entry to Manang and the high Himalayan Buddhist culture.

Soon, you reach Dharapani, a busy crossroads where the Manaslu Circuit meets the Annapurna route. Here, the trail comes alive with mule trains and other trekkers, and you see your first big mani walls carved with ancient Buddhist prayers. Always walk along the left side of the wall to show respect to the culture. Here, you notice the air getting cooler as the subtropical heat gives way to the fresh scent of the high mountains.

After lunch at Dharapani, the trail moves into a thick forest of pine, fir, and rhododendron, climbing steadily up stone stairs toward Danaque. The effort pays off at the high ridges of Timang (2,270 M), the destination for the day. Upon arrival, the trees clear and reveal a stunning view of Mount Manaslu and Peak 29. From here, the snow-covered peaks feel almost close enough to touch, giving you a real sense of how high you’ve climbed.

Compared to the previous section, today’s walk is shorter and easier to help your body adjust as you climb above 2,600 meters. The air is cooler and fresher as the trail winds through deep pine forests and rhododendron groves. Keep your eyes open, you might spot grey langur monkeys swinging through the trees or hear mountain eagles calling from above. You still follow the Marsyangdi river upstream and pass the small settlement of Koto, the gateway to the Nar-Phu Valley. You also cross a couple of sturdy bridges with amazing views of the turquoise water below.

By early afternoon, you’ll reach Chame, the busy center of Manang. The village sits under the towering Lamjung Himal, with Annapurna II rising in the distance. A highlight here is the natural hot spring by the river. It just requires a 5-10 Minutes walk. You simply cross the large metal suspension bridge over the river to the northern bank to reach the concrete bathing pools. Additionally, filled with shops, a health post, and even a bank, Chame gives a touch of comfort before the high-altitude stretches ahead.

The trail follows the Marsyangdi River through a narrow valley, bringing you face-to-face with the massive Paungda Danda rock face. This smooth granite slab rises 1,500 meters from the riverbed and is so perfectly curved that locals call it the “Gateway to Heaven.” Walking beneath it, you get a real sense of the huge scale of the Annapurna mountains.

Then, the trail continues through high, fragrant pine forests and past the calm, green waters of Dukar Pokhari, a small alpine lake reflecting the surrounding peaks. Soon you reach Pisang, a village known for its traditional Tibetan-style stone houses and old monasteries. From your lodge, the snowy pyramid of Annapurna II dominates the horizon, glowing golden at sunset. This marks your entry into the high-altitude desert and the spiritual heart of Manang.

Walking past old stone monasteries and centuries-old mani walls, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world, looking down on the wide, U-shaped Marsyangdi Valley.

Upon arrival at the medieval-style village of Ngawal, you stop for a short tea break. From here, the trail descends toward Braga, where you witness the famous Braga Monastery dramatically clinging to the cliffs. The day ends as you reach the village of Manang (3,540 M), a maze of stone houses and fluttering prayer flags. Today is a rest and acclimatization day. It is strategically included since you’re at 3,500 meters. Plus, you are heading toward the higher passes, so altitude sickness is a real risk. So you have to hydrate well and let your body adjust to the altitude following the rule “climb high, sleep low”. You can take a scenic hike up to the Gangapurna Viewpoint or the steeper trail to Ice Lake (Kicho Tal). From the viewpoint, you can see the emerald-green Gangapurna Lake and the blue-tinted Gangapurna Glacier. From Ice Lake (Kicho Tal), the still waters reflect the massive Annapurna peaks. In both places, Annapurna III and Gangapurna feel so close that it’s almost like you could reach out and touch them.

After the acclimatization hike, you can explore Manang in the afternoon. Walking through narrow, stone streets, you can visit the ancient Braga Monastery to hear monks chanting and check out a health talk at the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic. This day helps you stay strong for the tough Thorong La Pass ahead and gives time to refuel at local bakeries, meet other trekkers, and soak in the unique high-mountain vibe.

From Manang, you leave the main Annapurna Circuit route at Old Khangsar and head into a wilder, more remote area for the detour to Tilicho Lake. The trail gets much rougher as it climbs along a high ridge, from where the views of the deep Marsyangdi and Khangsar Khola valleys show you how far you have arrived. Continuing on, you’ll come face-to-face with the massive, jagged “Great Barrier,” a line of peaks linking the Annapurna range to the north.

The toughest part is crossing the scree and narrow slopes, where loose, sliding rock makes footing difficult. However, the raw, dramatic beauty of the high Himalayas encourages you. After some hours of walking, you finally reach Tilicho Base Camp (4,150 M) by late afternoon. The base camp is a small cluster of basic lodges in a quiet, bowl-shaped valley surrounded by towering peaks of the Annapurna Massif, the jagged Tilicho Peak Range, and the frozen ridges of the Muktinath Himal on all sides. Far from the modern world, you can feel the full power of nature as you get ready for tomorrow’s steep climb to one of the highest lakes in the world.

This is one of the hardest but most rewarding days of your trek as you climb toward one of the highest lakes in the world. You’ll wake up before dawn in the freezing cold and start a slow, steep climb with your headlamp, following the zigzag trails of the Tilicho Lake path. Above 4,000 meters, the thin air makes every step tiring, but seeing the sun hit the “Great Barrier”, the huge peaks, including Tilicho Peak (7,134 M), give you the energy to keep going.

Finally, you’ll reach Tilicho Lake (4,919 M), a huge turquoise lake surrounded by giant glaciers and towering Annapurna peaks. Here, the silence is deep, broken only by ice shifting or wind across the 7,000-meter mountains. After taking photos and celebrating, you’ll hike back down carefully over the scree slopes to Base Camp. The day ends with a warm dinner, reminiscence, and pride of reaching this hidden Himalayan treasure. It’s a day that challenges your body and rewards your spirit.

Now, it is time for a fairly short but steady climb as you get closer to the base of the famous Thorong La Pass. The trail runs along the mountainside and crosses a high suspension bridge over the deep Jarsang Khola gorge before reaching Thorong Phedi (4,450 M). In Nepali, “Phedi” means the foot of the hill. Living up to its name, this small camp sits at the bottom of a huge mountain wall that connects Thorong Peak and Yakwakang (6,482 M). You might see bearded vultures or Himalayan griffons circling above these rocky slopes.

Here, the atmosphere is full of excitement and nervous energy as trekkers from all over the world prepare for the big climb. Movement is slower here because of the thin air. Even doing simple tasks like tying your shoelaces, repacking, or climbing stairs takes steady effort. After an early dinner in the busy dining hall, you need to head to bed long before sunset, ready for tomorrow’s climb to 5,416 meters in the freezing pre-dawn hours. This is the final moment of preparation for the highest point of your Himalayan adventure.

Today is the hardest and most important day of your Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake trek. It begins with a tough climb toward High Camp (4,925 M) around 3:00 AM, in the freezing dark, lit only by your headlamp. Because of the thin, cold air, you naturally walk slowly and focus on your breathing. As the sun rises, you can see the peaks of the Annapurna and Chulu ranges turn golden, revealing the huge snowy mountains around you. Step by step, you move closer until you finally reach the top of Thorong La Pass (5,416 M), marked by colorful prayer flags and a stone chorten. From the summit, you can see vast mountain views stretching toward the distant land of Upper Mustang.

After celebrating and taking photos, you begin a long descent of about 1,600 meters on the other side of the pass. As you walk down, the landscape quickly changes from snowy slopes to the dry, desert-like terrain of the Kali Gandaki ValleyThen, you witness a massive peak of Dhaulagiri (8,167 M) rise on the western horizon. You reach Muktinath in the afternoon. It is a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. Here, you can visit the Jwala Mai temple and the 108 brass water spouts where pilgrims bathe in icy mountain water. As you rest at your lodge, the thicker air brings relief, and the tiredness slowly turns into pride after having completed one of the greatest trekking challenges in the world.

This dramatic valley lies between two giant mountains, Dhaulagiri to the west and Annapurna I to the east. As you travel downhill, the dry, windy landscape of Lower Mustang slowly changes into green forests and terraced farms.

Your destination is the riverside village of Tatopani, which means “hot water” in Nepali. The village in Myagdi district sits in a warm, green valley and is famous for its natural hot springs. In the afternoon, you can relax in the steaming pools, letting the warm, mineral-rich water soothe your tired muscles. Surrounded by trees and the sound of the rushing river, it’s the perfect place to rest and enjoy a little comfort before the final climb toward Poon Hill.

Along the way, you may see farmers working in terraced fields, buffalo grazing, and children playing in stone courtyards. As you climb the long stone staircases on the hillside, the air fills with the scent of flowers and the sound of birds.

The day’s trek ends in the friendly village of Shikha (1,935 M), built on a wide, sunny slope. From your lodge, you can see the huge Dhaulagiri massif, the seventh-highest mountain in the world, rising across the valley. The green fields, blooming rhododendron trees, and snowy peaks create a beautiful view. After the cold and wind of the high pass, the warm atmosphere of Shikha serves as a perfect place to rest and recharge.

You need to walk up old stone steps through mossy trees and cross small, clear streams. The cool forest air makes the walk pleasant as you pass the quiet settlement of Chitre.

By late afternoon, you reach the well-known village of Ghorepani (2,860 M), famous for its blue-roofed lodges. It sits on a high ridge that offers one of the best mountain views in Nepal. Because it is quite famous for both national and international visitors, the lodges are comfortable, often with warm fireplaces where travelers gather and share stories. You can see the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges right from your guesthouse balcony, terrace, and even the communal courtyard. Hence, Ghorepani offers a beautiful preview of the sunrise you will see from Poon Hill tomorrow morning.

Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek Route Map

An Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek Map is a helpful guide that displays the trails and major elevation changes along this challenging trek route. It highlights the path through the Marsyangdi River valley, the journey to Tilicho Lake, and the crossing of Thorong La Pass. By studying the map, you can identify key villages, rest stops, and mountain passes while preparing for the changing landscapes from green forests to the high-altitude terrain of Manang.

We can divide the trek into three distinct stages: the Lower Annapurna Ascent, the Tilicho Lake Side-Trip, and the Thorong La Crossing.

The first stage is the Lower Annapurna Ascent, where the journey begins with a scenic drive to Bulbule and climbs steadily through the river valley toward the high-altitude desert of Manang. You will follow the path below to reach this cultural hub:

Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek – 19 Days Trip Information

Best Time For Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek is best during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is most stable for trekking. In spring, the lower trails up to Chame (2,670 M) are filled with blooming rhododendrons, while higher areas beyond Manang (3,540 M) have moderate temperatures of 0 °C to 15 °C. At this time, the melting snow makes crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416 M) safer and easier, so you can enjoy the high pass with less risk.

Similarly, in autumn, the post-monsoon air is crisp and clear. This allows you sharp and clear views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Daytime temperatures around Pisang (3,200 M) are comfortable at 10-18 °C, though they can drop to -10 °C at Tilicho Base Camp (4,150 M) after sunset. These conditions make it easier to reach Tilicho Lake and cross the high pass successfully.

However, trekking outside these seasons is also possible for those who want fewer crowds. In winter (December – February), temperatures at Tilicho Lake can drop to -20 °C, and the lake may freeze. That aside, the heavy snow beyond Khangsar can make the trail difficult, requiring crampons and a guide. Then, during the monsoon (June – August), the lower valleys are lush and full of waterfalls, but trails can be slippery, and leeches are common. Even so, past Tal (1,700 M), the weather becomes drier, and trekking is more manageable as you move higher into the Annapurna region.

If you are interested in doing two treks, then you can join the Manaslu Two Pass trek, which combines sections of both the Manaslu and Annapurna treks.

3 Major Location Highlights Of Annapurna Circuit With Tilicho Lake Trek

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is defined by three world-class landmarks that showcase the region’s geographical and spiritual diversity. There are several iconic stops that stand out for their natural beauty, cultural significance, and unforgettable experiences throughout the trek. Some of the most memorable highlights include:

Tilicho Lake (4,919 M)

Tilicho Lake is one of the world’s highest alpine lakes, a turquoise gem at the base of Tilicho Peak. You arrive here after a multi-day detour crossing dramatic, landslide-prone mountain terrain from Manang. The lake is spiritually important for Hindus and Buddhists, known in Hindu tradition as the “Sea of Silence” from the Ramayana. Its calm waters reflect the surrounding Annapurna peaks and the “Great Barrier” ice wall, creating a surreal scene.

Thorong La Pass (5,416 M)

Thorong La is the highest point of the trek and the world’s longest trekking pass. It links the green Manang Valley with the dry, trans-Himalayan Mustang region. Trekkers usually start before dawn from Thorong Phedi or High Camp to avoid strong afternoon winds. Reaching the summit, decorated with prayer flags, offers a powerful sense of achievement and 360-degree views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

Muktinath Temple (3,800 M)

Muktinath lies just below Thorong La on the western side and is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Known as Mukti Kshetra, or the “Place of Liberation,” it features 108 holy water spouts and an eternal flame burning behind a curtain. After the tough descent from the pass, trekkers often pause here to watch pilgrims perform purification rituals in the icy waters, while the landscape shifts into the dry, ochre Kali Gandaki Valley.

Permits For Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek

To hike the Annapurna Circuit and visit Tilicho Lake, you need two official trekking permits. These allow entry into the protected mountain areas and help keep the trails safe for everyone.

ACAP Entry Permit

The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit is the main one for this trek. It supports conservation of the region’s nature and wildlife, and the fees help maintain safe, clean trails. You’ll need to show this permit at checkpoints along the river valley on your way to Manang.

Category ACAP Permit Cost
Foreign Trekkers NPR 3,000 (Approx. USD 23)
SAARC Nationals NPR 1,000 (Approx. USD 8)
Nepali Citizens NPR 100

TIMS Card

The Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card tracks trekkers for safety purposes. It records your route and emergency contacts so authorities can help if needed. Since April 2023, the government of Nepal has required all foreign trekkers to have a licensed guide to get this card. This rule was created to make sure that no one gets lost or injured while walking alone in the remote wilderness.

Category TIMS Card Cost
Foreign Trekkers NPR 2,000 (Approx. USD 15)
SAARC Nationals NPR 1,000 (Approx. USD 8)
Nepali Citizens Free

Important Note:

  1. You can get both permits at the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara, or apply online through their official website or a registered trekking agency. Whether in person or online, you will need your passport details and passport-sized photos (digital or printed) to complete the application before starting your trek.
  2. Always carry your TIMS card and ACAP permit in your daypack, as mountain police will check them in different villages.
  3. You can get the ACAP permit yourself, but trekking the Annapurna Circuit without a guide is illegal in 2026. Violators may face a fine of around USD 120 or be stopped at checkpoints in Chame or Manang.
