Reaching Everest Base Camp (EBC) doesn’t mean the journey is complete. One amazing climb is the highlight of the EBC Trek: the iconic Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar. Gorak Shep serves as the base of Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, two legendary destinations, and completing each marks the perfect end to the adventure.
Kala Patthar (5,644 m) is a well-known viewpoint in the Everest region, known for clear, close views of Mount Everest. One of the main reasons trekkers choose the EBC Trek is to see Mount Everest, but the base camp itself doesn’t offer a view because the Khumbu Ridge blocks it. That’s why Kala Patthar is special and renowned for the front-row view of Mount Everest along with Nuptse, Lhotse, and Pumori.
Other highlights of Kala Patthar include a sunrise view from the viewpoint. Most trekkers reach Kala Patthar around sunrise and witness an amazing sight as the first rays of sunlight color the mountain peaks. Moreover, the sunset from Kala Patthar is equally amazing, but few trekkers choose this option because of the tiredness from the EBC hike. But those who hike there at sunset can see the evening sunlight turning surrounding mountain peaks into beautiful shades of gold.

It’s Short but Tough
One trekker who climbed Kala Patthar on her first high-altitude trek in 2022 said the climb was not only physically difficult but also tested her patience, determination, and mental strength. According to her, the climb wasn’t challenging only because of the terrain; she had already trekked for 9 days, and after so many days, her legs were tired, which added to the difficulty.
Snow Makes the Climb Hard
Weather is the major challenge trekkers face on the way to Kala Patthar. They have to walk through inclined sections where snow can be a major challenge, especially fresh snow, which makes the ground slippery and requires proper footing. One trekker needed around 2-3 hours to reach the top in snowy conditions as his feet kept getting stuck in snow pits.
The Final Section is the Hardest
Many trekkers say the final climb to Kala Patthar is the most difficult. The route near the top is steeper, and the strong cold air and wind make the climb harder. Some trekkers say the last 30 minutes feel the most challenging and almost makes them give up. But they are glad they didn’t give up.
The Top is not Visible for a While
This is one of the lesser-talked-about mental difficulties of the climb to Kala Patthar that our clients share personally. While climbing towards the viewpoint, at one point, you won’t be able to see your destination. You have to keep walking without clearly seeing how much farther you have to go. Although the hike is challenging, most trekkers say it’s not unreachable; it’s achievable. No rush is the key to completing the trek. Also, taking a short break, walking slowly, and giving your body enough time to adjust to the high altitude are other ways to complete the walk successfully.
