Bhutan set this fee deliberately. The government controls how many tourists enter and how much money flows in from tourism. The SDF goes directly into healthcare, education, and conservation programs. It is why Bhutan has free hospitals, free schools, and why the forests have not been cut. As of 2024 the USD 100 daily rate applies to most nationalities. Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian passport holders pay a different lower rate. In the Bhutan Short Tour, the Paro airport has one of the most difficult approaches of any commercial airport in the world. Narrow valley, mountain walls on both sides, runway at 2,200 metres. The approach is tight enough that you can see windows of houses during final descent. Only around 30 pilots in the world are certified to fly this route. Flight from Kathmandu takes about 1.5 hours and you cross above the main Himalayan chain on the way.
Paro first day. Taktsang Monastery, Tiger’s Nest, is at 3,120 metres on a cliff above the Paro valley. The hike from the base takes 2 to 3 hours going up through pine forest. The monastery was built in 1692 around a cave. Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown here on a tigress and meditated there in the 8th century. Whether you take that literally or not, the location is genuinely unusual. A stone building clinging to a vertical rockface above a 900-metre drop.
Thimphu next. Capital city, no traffic lights anywhere in the city. Traffic policemen in booths at some intersections instead. Buddha Dordenma statue on the hill above town is 51 metres tall, visible from most of Thimphu. Then Punakha, the old capital before Thimphu. Punakha Dzong sits right at the point where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet. Built in 1637, it has flooded and burned and been rebuilt across the centuries and still functions as an administrative centre. On the road between Thimphu and Punakha, Dochula Pass is at 3,100 metres with 108 chortens. On clear days you see the eastern Himalayan range from there. Masang Gang, Tsendagang, Terigang visible on good mornings.

Bhutan Visa and Entry for Foreign Travelers
No visa on arrival in Bhutan. Most nationalities need visa arranged in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Our team handles this before you leave Kathmandu. The visa costs USD 40 and is issued electronically. Processing 5 to 7 working days. Passport valid at least 6 months from entry date required.
The SDF is a separate payment from the visa. USD 100 per person per day for most nationalities. Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian visitors pay a different flat rate, lower than USD 100. The exact current amount for those nationalities changes and we confirm it when you contact us.
What the SDF actually pays for is something worth understanding before you go. The SDF funds the free hospital system, free schools from primary through university, and the environmental programs. Forest cover in Bhutan stays above 70 percent because of it. You are paying a daily fee to a country that has decided to stay the way it is. Most visitors who understand this think about it differently than a standard tourist tax.
Best Time to Visit Bhutan for Tours / Treks

Spring months, especially March and April, are when rhododendrons flower across the hillsides at different elevations depending on altitude. Below 2,000 metres the pink ones go first, then red and white ones higher up through April. Temperature in Paro and Thimphu around 10 to 20 degrees daytime. Also Paro Tsechu festival falls in March or April depending on the Bhutanese lunar calendar. Masked dance performances over several days in the courtyard of Paro Dzong, one of the bigger cultural events in the country. Worth timing the trip around if possible.
Autumn, September to November. Monsoon ends and sky clears. The Himalayan range is visible from Dochula Pass in October in a way that July and August simply do not allow. October is the best month overall for weather. Visibility sharp, temperatures comfortable, trails dry.
June to August is monsoon. Rain most days, Dochula Pass socked in with cloud, and some roads in less developed areas wash out. Thimphu and Paro are fine but the mountain views that make Dochula Pass worth stopping are mostly gone.
December and January, Paro gets snow some years. Temperatures in Thimphu drop below zero at night. Punakha down in the Mo Chhu valley is warmer than the rest of Bhutan in winter and sometimes pleasant. But the 6-day circuit in January is cold and some guesthouses along the route close for winter.
How to Get to Bhutan from Nepal
Kathmandu to Paro, Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines, around 1.5 hours. Only those two are authorized to fly into Paro. Schedule is limited, usually one or two flights per day depending on season. Seats in October fill weeks ahead. Our team handles the flight booking as part of the package.
Bhutan visa approval document is what the airline checks at Kathmandu check-in. Without it you cannot board. Our team sends all documents before departure day so nothing is missing at the airport.
One thing to know: overland entry into Bhutan from India via Phuentsholing is possible but does not apply when you are starting from Kathmandu. That route is for travelers crossing from West Bengal. All packages here use the Kathmandu to Paro flight. Return is Paro to Kathmandu on day six.
