20 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a least trekked area located on the eastern border of Nepal. The trails of this trek lead you to Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the third-highest peak in the world. Although it was opened to trekkers in 1988, it remains underrated to this day. The two primary reasons might be its remoteness and its being a restricted trekking area. There are two base camps in the region, the North and South base camps. The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek covers both treks simultaneously, circling the area. The rugged trail, remoteness, and opportunities for camping make this trek an ideal destination for adventure seekers.

For the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, most groups fly to Badrapur from Kathmandu and then drive to Taplejung. The trekking start point is Taplejung, and the ending point is Khebang. Two separate routes head northeastward from Taplejung, one to the north base camp and the other to the south base camp. These routes can be combined into a circuit, making the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek.

Initially, you will head towards the North Base Camp and return to cross the Sele La Pass (4,290 m) and reach the South Base Camp. You will return via the Tortong route to get to Khebung before driving to Bhadrapur. The Kanchenjunga Trek is one of the less crowded treks, making it suitable for those seeking solitude while trekking. Read along to know more about the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek.

Manaslu Circuit Trek

5.0 (68 Reviews)

5,106m

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a two-week-long adventure in Nepal’s Himalayas that goes around the eighth-highest mountain peak in the world, Mount Manaslu. Opened to trekkers in 1992, the route is less crowded than the other well-known Everest and Annapurna treks. Still, the Manaslu trek is gaining popularity yearly for its raw beauty, peaceful trails, and personal experience with the Himalayas.

The journey to the Manaslu Circuit is a moderate-to-strenuous trek that starts with a drive to Machhakhola and ends in Besisahar, taking in the exciting Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). Although the trek doesn’t involve any technical climbing skills, it does require a good fitness level, and having previous trekking experience is helpful. This is because the trek takes you through varied terrain, long trekking days, challenging passes, and continuous elevation gain.

The trek to the Manaslu Circuit is stunning because it takes place within Manaslu Conservation Area, a protected mountain region with 11 distinct forest types ranging from lowland sal and pine forests to high alpine meadows and glaciers. Likewise, the protected area is home to 33 species of mammals and shelters over 110 bird species and 2000 species of flowering plants. Besides, it’s home to about 9,000 residents, primarily of Gurung, Tamang, Tsumba, and Nubri-Tibetan ethnic groups. Thus, the trek lets you experience Buddhist culture and its traditions throughout the adventure.

One unique aspect of the Manaslu region is that it borders Tibet. Therefore, trekking in this region requires a restricted area permit, along with the MCAP (Manaslu Conservation Area Permit), ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit), and Chumnubri Rural Municipality Entry Permit. Also, trekking in the region requires you to be accompanied by a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency.

The best trekking time for the Manaslu Circuit is March-May (spring) and September-November (autumn), when skies are clear, and Larkya La is most reliably open and safe to cross. The major highlights of the trek involve walking along the Budhi Gandaki River gorge while enjoying views of Mount Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Himlung Himal, and Annapurna II.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek

4,130m

Annapurna I (8,091 meters) is the first ascended mountain in Nepal, and it is also the tenth highest mountain in the world. Annapurna Base Camp Trek is the journey that takes you to the foot of this very mountain. It lies in the Annapurna Region and is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. Since the Everest Base Camp Trek is difficult, many people opt for the ABC trek. What makes this trek unique is that you will experience the natural amphitheater located in the mountains.

Starting from Nayapul, the trek goes through multiple Gurung and Magar villages, adding a cultural angle to the trek. You will closely observe the local culture as you experience their hospitality. Besides, since this trek lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, you will get to witness a variety of birds and rhododendrons. It is a moderate trek, but it can also become challenging if you are not properly prepared. That said, it is one such trek that seamlessly blends culture, nature, and adventure, a feat that few treks can offer.
